Relocating to Arizona was a defining moment for our family. We took a risk, embraced the unknown and found a place where we truly belong, changing our lives in ways we never could have predicted.
In 2018, my family and I picked up our lives in Michigan, a place where I had spent my entire life, for the sunny skies of Sahuarita, Arizona. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it turned out to be one of the best we ever made.
In Michigan, I was a high school and middle school teacher for 12 years. I loved teaching and cherished my time in the classroom with my students. However, over the years, the joy of teaching was overshadowed by administrative tasks, endless testing and data analysis that didn't seem to benefit anyone. The pressure and the changing landscape of education made it clear that I needed to find a new path.
The idea of moving to Arizona came up during a conversation my wife, Krista, had with her aunt. Her aunt and uncle, Cindi and Paul, were successful real estate agents in Green Valley. Cindi suggested that we join them in their real estate business. Initially, Krista dismissed the idea, thinking I would never want to leave my teaching career and our life in Michigan. But after another long day at work, the idea suddenly didn’t seem so far-fetched. What if we took this offer seriously? We started exploring the area, doing research and figuring out if this was a real possibility.
Our kids, Ian, Will and Linnea, were all in their elementary and middle school years at the time. Uprooting them from their familiar environment was a major concern. Additionally, moving to a place where we knew very few people felt like stepping into the unknown. But we realized that staying in Michigan wasn’t aligning with our family’s goals. The opportunity in Arizona seemed to promise a better future, an adventure for our family to embark on.
After over a year of planning and deliberation, we finally took the plunge. We packed up our lives and moved to Sahuarita. The transition was challenging. Adjusting to a new environment, building a new network of friends and learning the ropes of a completely new profession was daunting. However, Cindi and Paul were fantastic mentors, teaching me the ins and outs of the real estate business. They got me started on the right foot, and I saw results early on in my real estate career. This allowed Krista to continue homeschooling our kids and support them through the transition.
Despite the initial hurdles, the positives soon began to outweigh the challenges. The weather in Arizona was a welcome change from Michigan’s harsh winters. Being closer to Krista’s mom, who winters in Green Valley, was a huge blessing. The beautiful, diverse landscapes—from deserts to mountains—offered endless opportunities for exploration and adventure with our kids. We discovered that people in Arizona are incredibly friendly, many of them having relocated from other places themselves. This made it easier for us to connect and build a community.
Professionally, the move was a revelation. Real estate allowed me to use my teaching skills in a new way. Instead of a classroom full of students, I had clients eager to learn about buying or selling their homes. I find joy in educating them, guiding them through the process and ensuring they feel comfortable and confident in their decisions. The patience and understanding I cultivated as a teacher translated well into real estate, helping me to build strong, trusting relationships with my clients.
While it was challenging initially, our family has thrived here. Our kids adapted well and made great friends. Ian is now in college studying engineering, Will plans to study architecture and Linnea dreams of becoming a librarian. We’re active in our church, have a great group of friends who have become like a second family to us, and we are always exploring new parts of Arizona!
What I love most about real estate is the variety it brings to my daily life. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities, whether I’m showing houses, advising on renovations or negotiating sales. I enjoy helping clients visualize the potential of a property, often suggesting improvements that could enhance their living experience. It’s rewarding to see their excitement as they imagine their new home and, sometimes, their new life here!
I work with a diverse range of clients, from retirees and military personnel to younger families relocating to the area. Having relocated here myself, I have a unique ability to offer support and predict questions or concerns my clients may have in order to provide a comprehensive experience from beginning to end and even after. With extensive experience in downsizing, estate sales and second homes, I pride myself on being adaptive to the needs of my clients and creating a smooth experience. I love the vibrant communities here and enjoy showcasing them, finding the right location and fit for each client’s distinct needs and goals.
